Session 9 Review

dementia caregiver web support logo

Congratulations! You just completed Session 9 of the Web Support Project for Dementia Caregivers! This session reviews important legal, medical and financial documentation. Let's review!

  1. You should consider involving your loved one in future legal, medical and financial planning before dementia progresses too far.
  2. It's important to understand what your loved one's wishes are for medical treatments. An Advance Directive is not just for someone who has dementia.  Anyone can have an accident or illness, so it is a good idea to prepare for the unexpected by having your own Advanced Directive.  Remember to review these documents regularly.
  3. Legal documentation, such as living wills or living trusts require a lawyer. These documents provide important instructions on estate, finances and belongings.
  4. If a Durable Power of Attorney has not been selected, the court may appoint a Guardian to make decisions for a person who no longer can. This can be a lengthy process, so consider having your loved select a Durable Power of Attorney in advance.
