Dementia Caregiver Reminders
Things to Remember
- It is important to remember to set aside time for yourself each day to relax.
- Eat well, exercise, get enough sleep, and visit your doctor regularly to monitor your own health.
- Follow a similar routine with your loved one each day.
- Develop a support system and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed.
- Keep communication with your loved one simple and calm.
- Remember that participation is more important than completion or accuracy – it is okay to bend the rules for your loved one.
- When visiting your medical provider:
- ask any questions or share any concerns you may have
- bring all medications and over the counter supplements your loved one is taking
- come prepare to take notes to help you remember care instructions or recommendations
- Keep dangerous objects and car keys locked in a secure location.
- Keep areas of the home well lit and clutter free to help prevent falls.
- When traveling with your loved one, try to keep a similar schedule to the one used at home.
- Organize and keep legal documents in a safe and secure place.
- There may be a time when your loved one requires more care than you can provide. It is important to remember that this not a reflection on your caregiving abilities.
- You are not alone. There are many resources and support options to assist you in this journey.
